Toon Kelder was an artist who tried out different styles. He was a member of Pulchri Studio. In addition to the training he followed, he was also a student of Alexander Henri Robert van Maasdijk and Frederik Nachtweh. Toon Kelder started painting nudes and still lifes, which was typical of the Hague School. Around 1948, however, there was a drastic turnaround in his style, and Toon Kelder switched to abstract images and sculpture.
Toon Kelder also made a lot of portraits, and he was considered part of the New Hague School. Many museums have included work in their selection, including the municipal museum in The Hague, the museum of modern art in New York and the municipal museum in Amsterdam.
