Willem Coenraad BROUWER (Leiden 1877 - Zoeterwoude-Dorp 1933)
Willem Brouwer is one of the first people to revive the pottery trade from 1900 onwards. His interest was not in decorative pottery, but in simple utensils that he manufactured with great simplicity and efficiency. The period from 1898 to 1909 can be seen as its heyday. His works are influenced by woodcut techniques and have mainly abstract motifs. He often used sober and muted color tones. After the First World War, other potters also produced products in this style. For that reason, Brouwer went in search of a new design and made use of more decoration and plastic ornaments. From 1901 he had his own pottery factory, where after 1907 he also focused on building ceramics and large monumental objects.
