Reparation of Kouwer Boomkens? Few will remember the work of the painter Willem GJ Kouwer Boomkens (1911-1991). In recent years he led a withdrawn life in Hoog Soeren and later Apeldoorn, ravaged by alcohol abuse, divorce in 1971, illness and lack of work ethic. He died lonely in a hospital in Apeldoorn in 1991 and his work, about which a very modest book appeared in limited edition in 1981 on his 70th birthday, seemed completely forgotten. Until the Doesburg art dealer Dick Nieuwenhuis ran into them while cleaning out the attic, without first knowing who owned those many oil paintings, watercolors and drawings and whether they had any artistic significance. After cleaning a few cloths, a new world opened up for Nieuwenhuis. He rediscovered Kouwer Boomkens, went in search of his work elsewhere and the result is now a sales exhibition.
