Willem Jacobus Rozendaal started his career at various stained glass workshops in the Netherlands. In 1921 he made his first woodcuts.
In 1924 he moved to Maastricht and became known for his designs for De Sphinx and later the Kristalunie Maastricht. He was a designer of Glass and Pottery. In his spare time he also made many wood engravings, especially Ex-libris, which are sought after. He also made designs for a number of stamps.
In 1937 he moves to The Hague to become a teacher at the Royal Academy of Art. Here, together with several other teachers (including Paul Citroen), he ensures a progressive policy and he is at the basis of the movement 'The New Hague School', to which his own work from this period can also be attributed.
His work is becoming increasingly expressive in nature.
The work of WJ Rozendaal can be found in many museum, corporate and private collections, including the National Collection.
