Willem van de Velde (1611-1693)
Willem van de VELDE (Leiden Ca. 1611 - Greenwich 1693)
Dutch painter of mainly marines. In his youth he was a sailor and later he became the official painter of the Dutch navy, working for Cornelis Tromp. He specialized in sea battles drawn in pen on canvas or panel, sometimes with brown washed up. He is especially famous for his paintings of naval battles during the Anglo-Dutch Wars, including paintings about the Four Days Marches Battle, the Battle of Dunkirk and the Battle of Ter Heijde.
In 1657 he lived in the Korte Koningstraat on the Lastage. When Cosimo III de' Medici came by in 1668, he lived on the Amstel. In 1672, at the beginning of the Third Anglo-Dutch War, he moved with his son Willem to England, where he entered the service of Charles II of England.
