William John COOKE was born in London in 1796 or 1797 and died in Darmstadt in 1865. In addition to being a very skilled engraver, he was also a draftsman and illustrator. He was a pioneer of working on steel plates, and he was also the inventor of a device for grading different shades of gray. William John Cooke worked for famous English artists such as JMW Turner, W. Daniell etc. A few years before his death he moved from England to Darmstadt, Germany, where he continued to work for the then very famous "Druck & Verlag van GG Lange". The signature of William John Cooke appears frequently on the engravings that appeared in ?Het Koningrijk der Nederlanden? presented in a series of Picturesque Views drawn from nature, and described by JL Terwen.
