British Pop Art artist. British Pop Art is much more poetic (sentimental and philosophical) than American 'New Realism' and is much more rooted in the tradition of old Europe. British Pop Art emerged in the mid-fifties, independently of American examples. More than the American pop artists, who preferred to incorporate the consumer world in which they lived directly into their art, the British worked from a theoretical motivation. They strived for a personal representation of the realization that society had changed radically under the influence of contemporary urban culture. They were interested in urban culture, as expressed in advertisements and advertising, and in science fiction. Fascinating signs, signals and colors were visible all over the cityscape. Comics, television, advertising, billboards and brand names, together with the absurdly idealized couple, challenge the viewer to free himself from his prejudices. The first confrontation with Pop Art that made a big impression on the English public was the 1961 exhibition 'Young Contemporaries', which showed works by David Hockney, Derek Boshier, Allen Jones, Laing, Peter Philips, RB Kitaj and Richard Smiths. .
