Co Westerik
Painter, Graphic artist, Draftsman, Photographer
Born in The Hague in 1924.
Co Westerik painted in a realistic style and was therefore different from the rest, because in the fifties and sixties, abstraction was the main focus. Because of this, among other things, Westerik's work provoked negative reactions.
Co Westerik made paintings, watercolors, drawings, lithographs, etchings and photographs. From the beginning, amazement about everyday situations and (human) nature has been his main motivation. He often put people in a dramatic situation. Throughout his career he has produced drawings and graphics in which he gives reality a remarkable twist. The photos mainly serve as sources of inspiration for the rest of his work.
Westerik was part of the Posthoorngroep with other artists from The Hague, such as Herman Berserik, Willem Hussem and Jaap Nanninga. The Posthoorngroep is also referred to as the New Hague School. From 1958 to 1971, Co Westerik taught figure drawing at the academy in The Hague.
Co Westerik was educated at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. He lives and works alternately in Rotterdam and the south of France.
