Artist
Villalba was born in San Sebastián in 1939. He was educated at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts in Madrid, in Andre Lothe's studio in Paris, and at the Department of Plastic Arts at Harvard University. In 1966 he started making his figures in methacrylate and plastic capsules in an expressionist style. He left painting in 1972 and turned to black and white photography, experimenting with processes of decomposition and re-composition and exploring themes such as dementia, cruelty and violence. As a painter and photographer, he was a pioneer in Europe in using photography as painting. He is considered one of the most prestigious Spanish visual artists in the international art world."
