David Adolph Constant ARTZ (The Hague 1837 - The Hague 1890)
Adolph Artz was a painter of the Hague School and a pupil of Jozef Israels. He was educated at the Royal Academy of Art in Amsterdam. From 1859 he worked together with his teacher Jozef Israels in Zandvoort. In 1866 he moved to Paris to work there for 8 years. During this period he made many study trips abroad, including to Germany, England and Italy. Artz painted cattle landscapes in a realistic style, for which the Hague School was also known. Artz was a great admirer of nature. He painted a lot by the sea and captured the fisherman's life there. His works can be seen in particular in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Municipal Museum of The Hague and the Katwijks Museum. His son, Constant Artz, was also a gifted painter.
