Dirk Breed was born in 1920 in the West Frisian village of Kolhorn (near Schagen). He lived and worked in Amsterdam for some time and left for Waverveen in 1965. Dirk Breed was a genuine North Holland painter, who created a furore with the way in which he depicted the vast polder landscape. His paintings are scattered all over the world. He has always remained a Kolhorner at heart. He has seen the anchovies come in. His entire painting life revolved around the polder, Kolhorn and the land around it with that atmosphere of enormous openness. Yet in 1952 he won the Royal Grant with a portrait painting, namely that of his neighbor in Kolhorn. Dirk Breed liked clean lines in his work, a fixed rhythm of trees and vegetation, the landscapes seem na_ef but at the same time there is much variety in his oeuvre. Breed continued to find the inspiration for his polder landscapes in the insignificance and loneliness of man in the vast polder landscape. It also says everything about Breed, who has always remained a polder boy. A modest man, who has also known the austere times of the artist's life. Who became a painter perhaps by accident because an illness left him with a stiff leg and was therefore limited in his choice of profession.
