George Emile Wagner (1889-1964) *Visual arts & design, De Larense School is the collective name for a group of artists who worked in and around the village of Laren in North Holland at the end of the 19th and early 20th century. . She originated from the Hague School, with which she had a lot of stylistic affinity. She mainly made portraits and designed posters for Philips. Born 7 September 1889 in Winschoten. Died October 16, 1964 in Utrecht. He wanted to become a painter from an early age, but was thwarted in this pursuit by his father. After a stay in the Dutch East Indies, Wagner briefly joined Philips as an advertising designer. Later he settled again as a painter in Nijmegen and received commissions to paint portraits and still lifes from notable manufacturers such as J_rgens, Hunnink and the well-known banker Pierson. A commission for a Station of the Cross remains unfinished because the church does not provide sufficient financial resources, but for the St. Stephen's Church in Nijmegen Wagner will make some stained glass windows as well as a mural of St. Francis for a church near Kronenburg Park. Wagner becomes a member of the Hague Art Circle. He will eventually settle in Utrecht to start Potterie Jacoba there around 1952, where he will make turned pottery and later cast pottery, which could be found in the better arts and crafts shops in the Netherlands. Later, a stained glass studio was added. All this shows the versatility of George-Emile Wagner. Yet his heart lies in painting portraits and still lifes. In 1955 he received the honorable commission from the Dekenale Church to paint a portrait of the renowned Cardinal De Jong. This painting gets a good press and signifies his breakthrough as a painter.
