Ernest Trova (February 19, 1927 - March 8, 2009) was an American Surrealist and Pop Art painter and sculptor.Ernest Tino Trova, whose father was an industrial designer, grew up in Clayton, St. Louis County, California. Missouri and attended Clayton High School. While studying at St. Louis University High School, he began a correspondence with the poet Ezra Pound, who was incarcerated/internted at St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington DC after World War II because of his pro-fascist stance in Italy during the war. . His interest was in design, art and poetry and he tried to forge these three components into a unity in his work. Trova was a self-taught artist and never attended art school. Initially he worked as a decorator and window dresser in a department store of the May Department Stores Company. Trova started out as a painter and later switched to the manufacture of three-dimensional constructions and sculpture. The chairman of the board, Morton D. May (a collector and amateur artist) purchased one of Trova's paintings, which he later donated to the Museum of Modern Art. In 1963, Trova exhibited his first works at the Pace Gallery in St. Louis. Some of his early works have been bought by the Guggenheim Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Gallery in London and the St. Louis Art Museum in St. Louis.The Falling Man - In 1964 Trova created his most well-known work, The Falling Man, of which he made several versions and the image of which was reused in serigraphs, on watches and kaleidoscopes. The serial nature of his work, as with Andy Warhol, was dismissed by the critics as too commercial and too kitschy.
