Gunnar Cyren (Gavle 1931)
Before Gunnar Cyrén started working as a glass designer for Orrefors in 1959, he obtained his diploma in gold and silversmithing. His glassware was distinguished from all else in that it was more refined and virtuoso produced. Cyrén always wanted to give his work a personal character, which clashed hard with the principles of mass production. He thought it was important that the object was both functional and elegant. Around 1975 Cyrén picks up silversmithing again and produces objects in which both silver and glass are combined. Well-known designs of his hand are the Pop series from 1965 and the Nobel cutlery that he designed especially for the Nobel Prize Gala and which is still used today.
