Helle OESTREICHER (Karlovy Vary 1936)
Oestreicher is considered one of the most important abstract ceramists. As a pupil of Wim de Vries, she concentrated on making pots and crockery. In 1961 she started her own studio where she started producing so-called 'anti-pots'. With this she showed that she did not agree with the great attention that was paid to pots, instead of, for example, plastics, within Dutch ceramics. In 1965 she left for England. According to Oestreicher, form plays a major role in her work. She builds compositions from elements of the same kind. Since 1964 she has been working with larger formats that were initially designed symmetrically and later asymmetrically. During her stay in England she did not have a studio. For that reason it was only able to produce small ceramics. This resulted in compositions of shell segments reminiscent of shellfish. Back in the Netherlands she continues this style. According to the ceramist, material is to be deformed and not just to serve as an utensil. In addition to ceramics, Oestreicher also works with other materials, such as glass and steel.
