He lives and works in Arnhem
Jaap Kroneman is one of the founders of Flat Real Art, a branch of the visual arts that uses concrete reality. Kroneman observes reality and takes it as the basis for his art. In his work he distorts reality by portraying it flatter than it really is. As a result, reality is recognisably abstracted.
In essence, this is an inverted form of 'Art Concret'. Jaap Kroneman's approach is different from that of those from 'Pop Art'. They take the ordinary and the banal reality and magnify it. Also Kroneman's use of reality does not resemble the way of the artists of the Düsseldorfer Schule, who register reality in a quiet and dry way. “For Jaap Kroneman it is not enough to register what is there. He scrapes images from reality bare, knocks them flat and then holds a sketch in his hands. It sounds like an old-fashioned profession, but instead of a Flat Real Artist you could call it a sculpture crusher.”
