Johannes ROSIERSE (Dordrecht 1818 - Dordrecht 1901)
Rosierse was born in Dordrecht and would live and work there for the rest of his life, except for a short trip to Leeuwarden. Initially he was a shop assistant in a shoemaker's shop, but later he chose painting and became a student of Machiel Versteeg and Johannes Boshamer. Through his teachers he became acquainted with the work of Godfried Schalcken (1643-1706), who was known for his candlelit interiors. He soon adopted that genre and developed it into a specialty, just like several other painters did at the time (Petrus van Schendel, Joannes Vaarberg). Between 1840 and 1889 Rosierse exhibited regularly at the annual Exhibition of Living Masters. He was an honorary member of the Dordrecht artists' society 'Pictura'. He died in 1901, aged 83. His work can be seen in the Dordrechts Museum and the Fries Museum in Leeuwarden, but also in Montpellier, for example.
