Joseph Maria Stam was born on November 2, 1926, the youngest of three brothers in Amsterdam. Due to the early death of her husband, his mother was forced to work outside the home and the boys were partly raised by their grandparents, who came to live in. As an Amsterdam street boy, Jos combined mischief with remarkably good school performances and even achieved his graduation at a very young age. high school diploma. Jos was very busy with drawing and painting and hoped to be able to do more with it after his school days. However, the prevailing war conditions made him decide to first obtain his teaching diploma. During this period he met his future wife Cocky van den Berg. After having worked as a teacher for some time, Jos was sent to the Dutch East Indies in 1947 as a conscript. During these three years of service, which would leave a lasting impression, he devoted as much time as possible to drawing and painting. After his return to the Netherlands, Jos went to study at the Rijksnormaalschool voor Beeldende Kunst, which later became the Rietveld Academy. He graduated cum laude, found work as an art teacher at the pedagogical academy in Beverwijk and settled with his family in nearby Heemskerk. In 1961 Jos won the prestigious Henri_tte Roland Holst Prize for graphics, after which he was faced with the difficult choice. to profile himself fully as an artist or to continue to combine being an artist with his job as an art teacher. He opted for the latter, because he did not consider 'the uncertain artist's existence' a good basis for a happy family life, and it was his family, which now had four children, that came first for him. The result was a double job: a good art teacher with attention to the individual student and a passionate artist who needed a pencil and brush to live. Exhibitions of his work were enthusiastically received and Jos was also widely praised as an art teacher, but at the end In the 1970s, perfectionism took its toll: after two heart attacks, he had to say goodbye to his job at the pedagogical academy for health reasons. Although Jos had to take care of his health, he did find the artistic freedom he had longed for all his life and became completely absorbed in being an artist. His work became more colorful and the choice of subjects more varied. His health stabilized and he produced watercolors, oil paintings, linoleum cuts, etchings and drawings at an almost unimaginable pace. More and more portrait and landscape commissions and new successful exhibitions followed. A definitive breakthrough seemed to announce itself when disaster struck on 20 March 1985 and a cardiac arrest put an end to the short but rich life of this versatile artist.
