Julie de Geluk (1877-1924) was born in Gorinchem, raised in The Hague but worked in the Laren area. She chose her subjects close to home: plants, animals, portraits and village scenes. A female graphic artist was still a rarity in those days. It is all the more admirable how capable she was. Her work did not go unnoticed in her own time: she was one of the artists who enjoyed the patronage of the Hague art pope HP Bremmer. She was in contact with the sculptor Joseph Mendes da Costa and with Bart van der Leck. Unfortunately, her oeuvre is modest. She was in poor health, suffered from depression and committed suicide at a young age.(from the website of the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag-Susan Adams)
