Maarten Ploeg (Arnhem, October 14, 1958 - February 19, 2004) was an interdisciplinary artist, painter, musician and television producer. He was a pioneer in video and computer art. Ploeg was educated at the audio-visual department of the Amsterdam Gerrit Rietveld Academy, later he continued his studies at Ateliers '63. In 1978, Ploeg started Soviet Sex with fellow artist Peter Klashorst, an art punk band that, much later, also included singer Ellen ten Damme, painter Bart Domburg and (brother) Rogier van der Ploeg were part of it. Ploeg was also singer and guitarist in Blue Murder, Astral Bodies and Interior. Together with Peter Klashorst, he formed the Dutch core of De Nieuwe Wilden, a painting movement that caused a sensation around 1980 with expressive canvases. Unlike his colleagues, who mainly painted figuratively, Maarten Ploeg was mainly interested in abstract images. He made paintings composed of bright colors and simple, more or less geometric shapes. In the 1990s, he concentrated on computer art. ?With the computer I can make completely abstract images, something I can't do when I paint,' he said. ?I can't paint abstractly, and I want to understand where I can't.?
