Mattheus Johannes Maria (Matthieu) Wiegman (Zwolle, May 31, 1886 ? Bergen (North Holland), April 5, 1971)[1] was a Dutch artist. He was a painter, draftsman, wall painter and stained-glass artist, posters and book bindings are also known from his hand.
Wiegman attended the Craft School in Alkmaar. He arrived in Bergen in 1911, having completed his studies between 1905 and 1909 at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. Together with Leo Gestel and Arnout Colnot, he was one of the most important figures within the Bergen School. He greatly admired the work of Paul C_zanne. In 1909 he drew up his first religious painting, The Preaching of Saint Willibrord. During his career he made many religious performances. The Bergen painters pointed out the new possibilities to him. Wiegman participated to his heart's content. He mainly devoted himself to luministic work. He also regularly traveled to France to work there. He was a member of the Dutch Artist Circle. In 1918, at the age of 32, he was asked to become a professor at the Amsterdam Academy. Gradually, the optimistic element increasingly predominates in Wiegman's work, until the last 20 years of his life, in which he used the brightest and harshest colors. , colors that are very unusual. Important for Wiegman's work were his still lifes inspired by his friend De Zarate. Wiegman preferred to use the objects to be painted to fill the background.
