Painter, sculptor, graphic artist.
Born in Baghdad in 1965.
Education:
Quraish was educated at the Art Academy in Baghdad.
He lives and works in Amersfoort.
Quraish decided to leave Iraq in 1994 and went to the Netherlands. Quraish focuses on the making process in his art; his work is the result of a combination of the attitude of a child and an artist: spontaneity meets caution. Quraish works with a variety of materials and techniques: he surfaces with and then scratches plaster, cement and glue with talcum powder. He rubs a layer of wax over the paint layers before the work is finally finished. Quraish takes inspiration from 'primal' cultures: symbolism of African peoples, myths from Mesopotamia. This is reflected in the inscriptions and numbers, which suggest a poetic timelessness.
Exhibitions and prizes:
Quraish first exhibited his work in Spain in 1992. His work has also been exhibited in the Netherlands, Germany, France and Tunisia.
