Paul Blanca is a self-taught photographer

Dutch art photographer Paul Blanca, real name Paul Vlaswinkel, made his breakthrough in the 1980s with his self-portraits, which are seen as violent and confrontational. The American Robert Mapplethorpe and Andres Serrano have influenced the work of Paul Blanca. Paul Blanca started photographing after he met the daughter of painter Aat Veldhoen, Eva Veldhoen. In the beginning these were color photos, but later Paul Blanca switched to black and white.
In 1986, Paul Blanca was working on a book called 'Timing', which published his photographs accompanied by Koos Dalstra's poems. The pinnacle of Paul Blanca's work was a series where he used the blood of bulls for his work.
