Permeke belonged to an artistic family. He was the son of the painter Constant Permeke and Marie Delaere, who stayed as war refugees in Sidford, and grandson of the painter Henri Permeke. He was also the nephew of the art photographer Maurice Antony, who photographed the family of Constant Permeke (and the young Paul Permeke) several times during the interwar period. He was also the nephew of Emiel Veranneman, art critic and furniture designer. Paul Permeke has three children, Mark, Cathy and son Paul who also paints and sculpts. His brother John Permeke (died 1993) manifested himself as a painter and his son James Permeke painted figuratively and incorporated influences from expressionism, impressionism, more specifically elements of James Ensor, Marc Chagall and Bernard Buffet. He painted folk scenes with a pronounced color scheme: city and village views, peasant scenes, circus artists and vari_t_ artists, fantasy scenes, carnival and beach scenes.
