Schiedam. Hellemons studied at the Academy of Visual Arts in Rotterdam (1976-1981) and at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht (1984-1985). After his education he established himself as an independent artist in Schiedam. In 2005 he obtained his first degree as a teacher of visual arts and design at the Hogeschool Rotterdam, followed in 2008 by the Master in Education of Arts. Since 1987, work by Hellemons has been shown in some thirty exhibitions in the Netherlands and abroad. Various Dutch museums have purchased his work. Since 1989 Hellemons has also been working on (art) commissions, including a portrait of the director Paul Ruven, commissioned by the municipality of Amersfoort. Hellemons is active in various fields: visual arts, photography, video installations, wall hangings (together with the Textile Museum in Tilburg), developing teaching packages, art project management. A recurring theme in Hellemons' work is the relationship between the private domain and the public domain. The Private Domain exhibition in the Nederlands Fotomuseum (1999), opened by J. Bernlef at the time, is an example of this.
