Peter STRUYCKEN (The Hague 1939)
Struycken was educated at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague from 1957 to 1962. In 1968 he took another course at the Institute of Sonology at Utrecht University.
Struycken initially lived and worked in The Hague. After having worked in Arnhem for a short time, he settled in Gorinchem in 1981.
The work of Peter Struycken belongs to the New Abstraction. Struycken is known to the general public for a series of stamps from 1981 of Queen Beatrix, made up of colored dots. Before 1962 Struycken made figurative art, but from then on he started experimenting with proportions in shape and colour. That becomes an important theme in his, from now on, abstract work. Since 1969 Struycken has been using a computer to make art and in his research into uncovering structures. He also makes light installations, which have been placed in, among others, the Amsterdam Music Theater and the Netherlands Architecture Institute. From 1964 Struycken taught at the Academy of Visual Arts in Arnhem, where he founded the 'Monumental New Style' department in 1966. He taught form and color in relation to each other, both two- and three-dimensional as well as in relation to architecture. He has also been a teacher at Eindhoven University of Technology, the State Academy of Visual Arts in Amsterdam and the Dutch Art Institute in Enschede.
Exhibitions and prizes:
Sturycken has received several prizes for his work, including the Sikkens Prize and the Jacob Maris Prize. In 2002 he received an oeuvre prize from the Fund for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture, and in 2008 the medal of honor for Art and Science. In 1984 Struycken was appointed Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau.
