Pieter Kooistra (Leeuwarden, June 24, 1922 - Tiel, May 5, 1998), was a Dutch painter, graphic artist, photographer, sculptor and writer. Kooistra was self-taught. He worked mainly expressionist-fauvist, in Leeuwarden, Bergen, Terschelling, Amsterdam and from 1974 in Varik. His main subjects were landscapes, nude figures and non-figurative work. In the Netherlands he has become known as the spiritual father of the art lending/artothèque. He believed that a work of art was a means of raising awareness of unity in diversity, such as life itself, and wanted to bring this ideal closer to ordinary people. Pieter Kooistra was very socially involved. He was the founder of the foundation "Uno-inkomen", probably the very first organization that advocated a worldwide basic income. Kooistra organized sculpture routes of his works in cities such as Amsterdam, Alphen aan den Rijn, Ridderkerk and Tiel. In 1978 the municipality of Tiel unveiled its sculpture route, the Street Scene Collection. He had been commissioned to place a work of art at the Agnietenhof theatre. However, Kooistra calculated that he could make twelve images by means of a lease plan for companies. He produced twelve monumental geometric-abstract sculptures of brass and aluminum. It soon became clear that realizing twelve statues for the price of __n turned out to be technically disadvantageous: one statue was driven off its pedestal, another fell over during a storm. In 1980, only four statues were left intact. In 2006 one of the four remaining statues was restored and relocated at the Waalkade. Together with another statue at the Sint Maartenskerk, it shows part of the history of a special project by a striking artistSource; Rijkskunstdienst The Hague, wikipedia
