Recontent D'HAESE (Geraadsbergen 1928 - Paris 2007)
The Flemish sculptor, draftsman and graphic artist Recontent d'Haese saw the light of day in 1928 in Geraardsbergen as Recontent D'Haese. As an artist he would only use his first name from 1960.
Initially, Recontent was trained as a goldsmith. From 1947 to 1951 he studied at the Ecole d'architecture et des arts decoratifs in Brussels. Then he also got acquainted with Pierre Alechinsky. After he had contributed to the renovation of the Ateliers du Marais, he also got to know the other CoBrA members. He made his first works in metal there. Four of those works were on display at the famous 1951 CoBrA exhibition in Liège.
It wasn't until 1958, long after the movement's disintegration, that Recontent started to make some progress with his own work. After that, for almost half a century, he made a whole nation of humorous and mysterious mythical creatures in various types of metal, but also on a minute scale in bread, which fit entirely within the language of CoBrA.
These strange creatures, sometimes resembling insects but sometimes resembling birds, were often presented in groups and usually performed human activities. Recontent worked with copper, lead and tin. He died in 2007 in Paris. His brother, the well-known Flemish surrealist Roel D'Haese, and his sister, Degga D'Haese, are also sculptors with a striking style.
