Syb Velink was originally a teacher. From 1954 to 1963 he took drawing and painting lessons with Eduard Kools in Leeuwarden. Artists such as Benner, Klee, Miro, Chagall and Morandi had a great influence on him during these years. In 1962 he made his debut at Kunstzaal Van Hulsen in Leeuwarden. Only five years later did he dare to give up his schoolmastership to earn a living as a free artist. In the sixties and seventies he belonged to a new generation of artists with people like Sies Bleeker, Anton Rinzema, Sjoerd de Vries and Anne Huitema. He exhibited together with them in the Princessehof and the Fries Museum in Leeuwarden. Because of his friendship with the Frisian poet Jan Dotinga, he also had his own place in Frisian art life. Syb Velink's work can be divided into a number of periods. In the sixties he makes semi-abstract work with horses and birds and still lifes and abstracted landscapes with the Frisian country as the starting point.
