Theo WOLVECAMP (Hengelo 1925 - Amsterdam 1992)
Theo Wolvecamo was a Cobra artist. Theo Wolvecamp started painting at a young age. After studying for two years at the art academy, he stopped his studies in 1947 and moved to Amsterdam. There, Wolvecamp became involved with the Experimental Group in Holland and in 1948 with the Cobra movement. Wolvecamp worked in Paris from 1953 to 1954, after which he returned to his birthplace Hengelo. From Twente he took part in many national and international group exhibitions.
Wolvecamp's oeuvre can be divided into different periods. Just after the war, the work of Pablo Picasso had a lot of influence on Wolvecamp. Later he became interested in the painter Joan Miró. Furthermore, Kandinsky had a lot of influence on his work. After a Mir_-like beginning, Wolvecamp made abstract expressionist works in often dark tones and with thick layers of paint. Fantasy creatures and other figurative elements appear in his compositions (particularly from 1955 onwards), making them reminiscent of the paintings of Danish COBRA member Asger Jorn.
Relatively few works by Theo Wolvecamp, especially from his Cobra period, have survived. This was because Wolvecamp was often very critical of his own work, destroying or overpainting many paintings.
