Tilo Baumgärtel studied at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig, where he was taught by Arno Rink. He is considered a member of the New Leipzig School and works figuratively with large-format oil paint. His paintings depict dreamlike scenes with mysterious figures, often set in settings reminiscent of film or stage sets. Light and atmosphere play a central role in his work, which balances between realism and alienation. He lives and works in Leipzig.
