Xavier DE COCK (Ghent 1818 - Deurle (Sint-Martens-Latem)1896)
Xavier De Cock studied at the Royal Art Academy in Antwerp (he was a classmate of Ferdinand de Braekeleer,) and went on a study trip to the Netherlands to copy the old masters. He then spent some time (1852-1860) in Paris (together with his much more famous younger brother and landscape painter César De Cock) where, influenced by the painters of the Barbizon school, he adopted a more impressionistic style. Many of his paintings are characterized by a certain “vagueness”. He took part in several important French exhibitions and his work has been compared by critics to that of Charles-François Daubigny. In his later life he left France and settled in the painter's village of Deurle (near St. Martens-Latem). He is considered one of the forerunners of the painters of the School of St. Martin's Latem. Work by Xavier De Cock can be found in the Royal Museums of Fine Arts in Brussels and A'pen as well as in museums in Ghent, Kortrijk and Liège.
