Independent Group

The Independent Group was a loose association made up of British designers, architects, photographers and artists. This group met regularly at the Institute of Contemporary Art in London. This group was interested in mass media, consumerism and technology. This is the starting point of their work. They were inspired by so-called 'low' art. Low culture generally refers to popular culture, as opposed to 'high' culture, which refers to general art in the appropriate institutions. For the Independent Group, daily life with the well-known clichés is their source of inspiration. In doing so, they challenged the prevailing modernist view. Introducing popular culture to British art, they have had a significant influence in the rise of British pop art.
