Pictorialism

Pictorialism was a movement within photography that reached its peak between 1890 and 1910. It can be seen as the first movement in which photography was seen as an art form in its own right. The photographers of Pictorialism wanted recognition for photography as painting. They did this by giving an impressionistic twist to their photos and manipulating their photos to make the photos look more like a painting. Eventually, interest in pictorialism waned due to the rise of modernism.
