Founded in 1768
The Royal Academy of Arts in London was created by a petition signed by 36 artists and architects. They wanted to start a society that would promote the arts. They also wanted an annual exhibition and a School of Design. This is how the Royal Academy of Arts was born. Since 1867, the Royal Academy of Arts has been located in Burlington House. In addition to being an art school, the Royal Academy has a broader role, which is to promote the appreciation, understanding and practice of art. The artists affiliated with the academy represent many different perspectives, but everyone feels strongly connected to the arts and the contribution that artists can make to the world.
