Ai Weiwei raises his middle finger once again in a silkscreen tondo. In Circle in Blue, Weiwei’s iconic gesture radiates outward in a continuous composition. Weiwei began using the middle finger motif in 1995, when he took photographs for his series Study of Perspective. In that series, Weiwei raised his middle finger to historical monuments in an act of resistance that emphasizes the collective right to form, maintain, and express individual beliefs. For the artist, the power of such a simple gesture lies in the fact that anyone can make it.


The artwork was printed in 11 layers at Make-Ready in London. The blue and white colour scheme, glossy finish and circular shape are reminiscent of Weiwei's porcelain sculptures, which themselves reference ancient Chinese ceramics from the Yuan and Ming dynasties.
