Alberta Johanna Smetz was born on August 12, 1893 in Nieuwer-Amstel (now Amstelveen). She was a student of the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, of AM de Groot (drawing lessons) and Johan Meijer (painting lessons). She was married to Johannes Meijer. Johanna Smetz lived and worked in Amstelveen, Amsterdam 1917, Laren (NH) 1917-1919, then in Blaricum.
She painted, watercolored and drew flowers and still lifes with flowers. She was also an arts and crafts artist and also made peat color etchings and engravings. She created a mural that was awarded the 'Vrouwe Vigelius' prize. She has also designed catalogs for flower nurseries. She usually signed; AJ Smetz/AJS
Was a member of the ver. BK 'Laren-Blaricum'.
Alberta Smetz died in Blaricum on August 16, 1953.
