Ans Wortel was an audodidact artist and exhibited regularly from 1960 onwards. Her work consists of drawings, collages, etchings, gouaches, and paintings, but primarily mixed media.
Since the 1960s, Ans Wortel has occupied a unique position in post-war painting. As a woman, mother, and artist, she had a wealth of often intense life experiences that served as an inexhaustible source of inspiration for her work. In particular, Ans Wortel has managed to portray emotions such as love, security, dreams, fears, the growth of a child into adulthood, and mother-child relationships in her work with exceptional skill.
Wortel's works consist of human figures seeking, embracing, or even repelling each other. The eyes, hands, and faces consistently play a significant role. The figures in her work appear to float in undefined spaces. Wortel's work often evokes associations with the universe through the depiction of the moon and stars, the contours of the globe, or the horizon. Sometimes, a surreal landscape emerges, cool and desolate, in which the figures are abandoned to their fate. Ans Wortel has also written several collections and a biography.
