Condition: Good, in new frame, ready to hang on the wall. With the characteristic stripes on the canvas caused by Heyboer laying the canvases on top of each other while they were still wet. See also the paint on the back of the painting.
When Anton managed to get back to the Netherlands from Berlin in 1944, he had to go into hiding. He has a two-week leave pass, but of course he's not going back. Under the floor is a small space in which he can hide from a raid, but he also has to be careful that neighbors and others do not see him.
Sometimes he goes to a friend in Vinkeveen. In his rowing boat he can lie unseen among the reeds, and so he still experiences some fresh air and light.
The atmosphere of the dark water and the reeds through which the light shines always remains with him as a safe world, far from the world of people who make each other's life impossible.
