  • Antonie Lodewijk (Anton) Koster, signing as Anton L. Koster or ALKoster (Terneuzen, August 8, 1859 – Haarlem, May 28, 1937) was a Dutch painter and designer. He was best known as a painter of flower fields.
  • Koster grew up in Zeeland. In 1880 he moved to The Hague, where he studied at the Royal Academy of Art. After graduating, he made a two-year study trip through France and the Pyrenees. In 1902 he settled in Haarlem and then permanently in Heemstede. Inspired by impressionism and the warm, expressive colors he had observed in France, he specialized in painting flower fields. His admiration for Claude Monet's painting Bulb fields and windmill at Rijnsburg (1886), which he had seen in Paris, also contributed to this choice. Among his friends he was called Anton Tulp.
  • Koster was very successful with his work and was called the 'Rembrandt' among Dutch flower bulb painters. Several of Koster's paintings were purchased by Queen Juliana, including The House of Benedictus de Spinoza in Rijnsburg. He also sold a lot of work internationally, especially in the United States.
Koster died in 1937, at the age of 77. His work can be seen in the Kunstmuseum The Hague, the Teylers Museum and the Frans Halsmuseum in Haarlem, the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo, the Zeeuws Museum in Middelburg and the Singer Museum in Laren (NH), among others. (Source Wikipedia.)
