Haeghebaert was a son of farmer and gardener Jan Haeghebaert and Silvia Monballui. The family moved in 1881 to the Sint-Clarastraat in Bruges, where Jan took over the florist's shop from Charles Van den Bon, under the name 'Etablissement horticole J. Haegebaert'.
Arthur learned from his father to be a gardener, but at the same time studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bruges with Pieter Raoux and Edmond Van Hove. He continued his studies from 1897 at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels.
