Étienne François Auguste Mayer, born on 3 or in Brest and died on 22 September 1890 in the same city, is a French painter and illustrator. Biography Auguste Mayer devoted himself to maritime painting from his youth, a genre he has continued to cultivate ever since, and was allowed to make voyages to the East, Scandinavia and the Netherlands on state ships. Mayer produced a large number of paintings, which demonstrate great skill in brushwork and meticulous care in faithfully reproducing sea scenes. Moreover, he composes well; but his paintings have been criticized as not giving a sufficient idea of what we might call the poetry of the sea, because they neglected grandiose and striking effects for the accuracy of details. Auguste Mayer also made numerous drawings, including several illustrating Brittany in particular, lithographed by Victor Petit and published in Voyagespicturesques et Romantiques dans l'Ancien France. Brittany by Charles Nodier, Justin Taylor and Alphonse de Cayeux, book published in 1845-1846. Auguste Mayer was promoted to officer of the Legion of Honor in 18671.
