Bernd Kastenholz (born 1949 Speyer)
Palatinate painter and graphic artist

He grew up in Haßloch and attended the master school for craftsmen in Kaiserslautern from 1964 to 1967 (apprenticeship as a painter). He then switched from 1967 to 1969 to the Staatliche Werkkunstschule Mainz and studied graphics and design. From 1969 to 1973 he studied graphics with Walter Brudi at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. Between 1970 and 1986 Kastenholz worked primarily with the graphic techniques of line etching and aquatint, preferring to color the black and white prints that were made in a complex manner. He used social outsiders such as jugglers, dancers, harlequins and ballad singers as motifs, which he exaggerated in an idiosyncratic color scheme and expressive line in a folkloric manner. In later years he continued his pictorial world in three-dimensional form. Kastenholz's sculptures consist of numerous painted, galvanized steel sheets, which he assembles into figurative objects, not without subtle humour.
Kastenholz is a member of the Palatinate Secession. He has lived and worked as a freelance painter in Gleisweiler since 1972. He was awarded the Palatinate Art Friends Promotional Prize (1973), the Palatinate Prize for Fine Arts (1976) and the Hans Purrmann Prize for Painting (1980).
