Information about the artist: Charles Doudelet (Lille, February 8, 1861 – Ghent, January 7, 1938), also sometimes called Karel Doudelet, was a Belgian/Flemish painter, graphic artist, graphic designer, art critic, glass artist, textile designer, bookbinding designer and book illustrator. -Training Higher Industry School (Ghent) and the Academy of Fine Arts (Ghent). Pupil of Edmond Sacre. He also took lessons in Antwerp with Constantin Meunier. After his studies he worked in the sphere of Symbolism and won numerous prizes and scholarships. However, it was as a book illustrator that he would make a name for himself with his woodcuts. His meeting in 1892 with the poet Maurice Maeterlinck would be decisive for this. He made illustrations for his poetry collections, and Maeterlinck also asked him to design the sets for his plays, including L'Oiseau Bleu. In 1900 he was commissioned by the Belgian government to make a study on the history of the book and of the printing press. For this he visited the major libraries all over Europe, and in particular the top libraries in Florence. He would remain in Italy until 1924. In addition to his work as a free artist and illustrator, he gave lessons in a drama school and became artistic director of the film studio 'Il Rinascimento'. His return to Ghent was rather tragic: due to his long absence he had lost his regular clientele and the symbolist movement within which his work was situated had now extinguished. He was, however, highly regarded there as a teacher at the Sint-Lucas School of Fine Arts in Ghent. He also worked as a drama teacher at the Royal School of Theater Oscar de Gruyter.
