Vernis mou is an illustration technique used in engraving. Vernis mou differs from regular etching by using a soft varnish, usually made from tallow or Vaseline to adhere to the paper. The degreased metal plate is covered with lacquer by tapping lightly and then heated slightly. The varnish absorbs the imprint of structured materials (lace, plants) or the outline of a drawing through a thin sheet of paper. When the varnish covers the plate, a sheet of thin paper, such as tissue paper, is placed on top and the sheet is drawn, usually with a hard-pointed pencil. Depending on the quality of the paper and pencil, a different result will be obtained on the plate: the slightest touch leaves a trace.
