Immediately after the war, Corneille, together with his friend Karel Appel, whom he had met at the state academy in Amsterdam, returned to his native region of Liège, where he visited various places from his childhood. Corneille then makes various "cityscapes and landscapes" drawings of this, including this work. After Corneille and Karel Appel returned to Amsterdam in 1946, Corneille gave an exhibition together with Karel Appel after first having given a solo exhibition.
Two years later, in 1948, Corneille founded the Cobra movement with the Dutch Karel Appel, Jan and Constant Nieuwenhuijs, the Belgians Christiaan Dotremont and Joseph Noiret and the Dane Asger Jorn, a name that refers to the different nationalities of the founders.
