Information about the artist:
Corstiaan de Vries (Rotterdam, 2 April 1936 - Amsterdam, 30 May 2008) was a Dutch visual artist. He was renowned as a portrait artist.
Corstiaan de Vries studied decorative arts and crafts at the Rotterdam Academy of Visual Arts. He became a set and costume designer for ballet, the Rotterdam theater and the musical Swingpop by Seth Gaaikema. In addition, he played piano for many years in the Cabaret Lurelei.
In 1962 he settled in the artists' village of Laren, where he developed into a draftsman. From 1965 he worked exclusively with colored pencils (of the brand Caran d'Ache) on ivory cardboard. He broke through with his portrait of Queen Juliana on the occasion of her silver government jubilee in 1973. He emphasized her domestic side, which had made her so popular. After that, many famous Dutch people wanted to be immortalized by him. He often included their children, pets and favorite things in his drawing. Sometimes they became family scenes in diptych or triptych. On average, he worked on a portrait for a month.
De Vries exhibited in many regional museums, but his drawings were not purchased by them. His free work is classified under Surrealism. Shortly before his death, he participated in the TV program Sterren op het Doek, in which he drew Paul de Leeuw. Between admission in March and broadcast in July 2008, he suffered a stroke and died in an Amsterdam hospital.
