  • Dirk BREED (Kolhorn 1920 - 2004 Waverveen)

Painter, draftsman, pen artist, watercolourist and maker of gouaches
Dirk Breed was born in 1920 in the West Frisian village of Kolhorn (near Schagen). He lived and worked in Amsterdam for a while and left for Waverveen in 1965. Dirk Breed was a genuine North Holland painter, who mainly made a splash with the way in which he captured the vast polder landscape on canvas. His paintings are spread all over the world. He always remained a Kolhorner in heart and soul. He saw the anchovies come in there. His entire painting life revolved around the polder, around Kolhorn and around the land around it with that atmosphere of enormous openness. Yet in 1952 he won the Royal Subsidy with a portrait painting, namely that of his neighbor girl in Kolhorn. Dirk Breed loved straight lines in his work, a fixed rhythm of trees and vegetation, the landscapes seem na_ef but at the same time there is a lot of variation in his oeuvre. In the insignificance and loneliness of man in the vast polder landscape, Breed continually found the inspiration for his polder landscapes. It also says everything about the man Breed, who always remained a polder boy. A modest man, who also knew the sober times of the artist's life. Who perhaps became a painter by chance because he was left with a stiff leg due to an illness and was therefore limited in his choice of profession.
