Dirk Herman Michaël Harting is op 8 maart 1884 te Salatiga op Java geboren. De familie keerde uit Nederlands-Indië terug naar het vaderland en vestigde zich in Amersfoort, een gemeente die in het grafisch werk van Dirk Harting een centrale plaats inneemt.
Dirk Harting was vrijwel uitsluitend graficus en vooral een knap etser. Hij graveerde ook postzegels en exlibris en maakte verder litho’s en tekeningen en een enkele maal aquarellen alsmede schilderijen in olieverf.
