The American visual artist Doug Mellis (1934-2019) moved from the USA to Amsterdam in 1979. Early in his artistic life he developed a preference for abstract expressionism, which best expressed his spontaneity and emotions. Without a preconceived plan, while painting, he searched for a balance between the known and unknown. His work is rich in color. Depending on his mood and impressions, his work varies from intense and dynamic with many layers of paint to subdued and poetic.
